Interview Team : Sudharshan; Mithun; Maris
Behindwoods Tamil Cinema Progressive is a new initiative to recognize and laud individuals who have associated themselves with gutsy new-wave cinema with an eye on taking Tamil cinema forward.

Abi & Abi Pictures is the dynamic, vibrant start-up at the intersection of films, creativity and youth culture that hopes to challenge the norm and detonate boundaries. They have been associated with interesting and bold attempts such as Kalyana Samayal Saadham, Thegidi and Pizza 2: Villa.

In a chat with Behindwoods as part of our “Tamil Cinema Progressive” initiative, Abinesh Elangovan of Abi & Abi Pictures talks about his firm and their modus-operandi.

Your company's mission and vision statement?

We don’t have a mission and vision statement as such. We work with the sole intention of making good films. We check for the content – unless the content is solid, we never take off any project.

Core idea and thought process when choosing to release a film with lesser known unheralded names associated with it?

Going by the past few years’ trend, the maximum number of movies that have succeeded did not have big stars in it. Only movies with strong content excel in theatres. People are intelligent, and they are clearly looking beyond the stars.

Does the company fear the failure of their project not working out at the box-office?

No. After all it’s a business. Our Balance Sheet at the yearend should be green – that’s all we care about. We don’t worry about individual movies. We track all our releases on the whole and if that’s profitable, we are safe.

Our parent company’s turnover is 700 crores, and we perform yearend audits along with our parent company.

We don’t worry about individual movies.

How does the company react when a film doesn't come out or perform as expected?

We buy movies based on our instinct. However, we cannot expect the same from audience. Reacting to it will change nothing because by the time we react, the movie would have been sent out of theatres.

However, we work to find what went wrong. We learn from our mistakes and take extra measures so that we don’t make the same mistakes again.

And, there are a lot of factors involved that decides the performance of a movie. The audience might not have liked it or we might have misjudged the content or chosen the wrong release date or would not have promoted it well.

From the outside, publicity may seem a simple task. However, it involves taking TRP of all channels, and the target audience of every program telecasted in the channels. Based on the movie’s center – A or B or C or ABC – we choose the channel and program. A lot of statistics is involved in this process.

How important is a team's previous track record and experience, when you decide to associate with that particular team?

Who we associate is very important, and only the previous track record helps understand our partners. We generally work on a First Copy basis. The First Copy helps judge the capability of the director and producer.

We bypass this process only for CV Kumar’s projects.

What change would you like to bring about or see in the industry?

In Bollywood, the budget and collections data are so transparent that they can be announced even on TV. On a Hindi movie’s wiki page, we have its entire financial performance.

However, it is not possible in Kollywood. Here, people sell tickets for Rs 100 and account it as Rs 50. In theater, we get two tickets – one in the counter and another just before we enter the screening premises. The second one is what the Tehsildar has permitted. Such manipulations are done to avoid being taxed.

So to get the actual number, we send our own people to the theaters. Even our accounts team will work with the theatres and cross check. After a long field work, the final net is cross checked along with the distributors and theatres.

To avoid such tickets tampering, we have proposed a system – Impact Ticketing to the government. This system uplinks all the required numbers to our database just like how Qube system works.
