With 229 million users worldwide, Twitter is known as one of the leading social media sites. The company is said to have been collecting the phone numbers and addresses of its users from May 2013 to 2017. It has been alleged that Twitter provided the information to private companies.

The complaint, filed by the US Federal Trade Commission, alleges that Twitter violated the 2011 regulation. Also, Lina Khan, chair of the commission, told a federal court that the practice had "affected more than 140 million Twitter users, while increasing Twitter's primary revenue."

Penalty

The complaint, filed by the Federal Trade Commission in the case, states that "a fine of US $ 150 million (Rs 1,100 crore in Indian currency) must be paid and new measures must be taken to protect user data." The complaint must be approved by a federal court in the state of California. If that happens, Twitter will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,100 crore.
