US, Taliban Sign Deal to End 18-year-old Afghan War

The US and its allies have agreed to withdraw their military troops from Afghanistan within 14 months if the Taliban upholds the deal.

The agreement states that the militants should not allow al-Qaeda or any other extremist group to operate in the areas falling under their control.

The signing ceremony happened in Qatar and was attended by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Taliban leaders.

The US invaded Afghanistan and launched air strikes following the 9/11 attacks by al-Qaeda which caused the death of thousands and after the Taliban refused to hand over Osama bin Laden, the man behind the attacks.
