The government has warned the residents to avoid nasal contact with tap water in order to protect themselves. CBS reported on Monday that one of the residents has contracted Naegleria fowleri, or the brain-eating amoeba. It affect the brain tissues. These microbes are found in warm freshwater bodies. They enter a human body through the nose and then travel up to the brain and also to the spinal cord, according to scientists.

The initially result in symptoms such as fever, nausea, headache, and so on. However, once it starts attacking the brain, a person might hallucinate. Have seizures, lose attention, experience confusion, and lose control over the body.

Florida has banned people from swimming in lakes and other water bodies, including swimming pools which are not properly maintained. From 1962, only 37 cases have been reported in Florida, and 145 cases have been reported in the US. However, out of the 145, only 4 people have survived the infection.

“Adverse health effects on humans can be predicted by avoiding nasal contact with the waters, since the amoeba enters through nasal passages,” the health department said.
