Days after an elderly couple from Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district, who fought armed robbers with plastic chairs and slippers was presented with special bravery award by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami.

The couple have been identified as P Shanmugavelu and his wife Senthamarai.

Proud and happy to meet the couple, Palaniswami awarded them with Rs. 2 lakh in cash and gold medals for their act of bravery. As they chased away two robbers who had come to attacked them with machetes at their home.

In the video, one armed robber can be seen trying to strangle Shanmugavelu, while he tries to free himself. On hearing his shout, wife Senthamarai, who was inside the house, comes out and starts attacking the robbers by throwing stools and chairs at them. On seeing the couple fighting bravely, the two robbers ran away.

As per NDTV report, the Chief Minister also named ISRO Chairman K Sivan as the recipient of APJ Abdul Kalam award. He will receive the award later in the month.

Sivan is awarded for his contribution to scientific development, students welfare and humanities, NDTV further reported.
