In a tragic case, a 48-year-old woman from Thadagam district was killed after the scooter she drove was hit by a motorcycle rode by a man, who was allegedly in an inebriated state, on Monday afternoon.

Since Monday evening, the deceased's husband sat at the accident spot, with the corpse of his wife demanding immediate closure of the TASMAC bar (Tamil Nadu state run liquor bar) from where the motorbike that killed his wife allegedly emerged. The deceased has been identified as R. Shobhana from Thadagam road.

According to The Hindu report, the accident took place at 3.45 p.m. when Shobhana was riding the two-wheeler to home after picking daughter from school. Shobhana is the wife of R. Ramesh, a member of People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy, which was in the forefront of protests against Kudankulam nuclear power plant. 

Though she wore a helmet, it was thrown off in the impact of the collision. Her daughter Shanthala (16), class XI student of Vidya Vanam at Anaikatti, who was riding pillion the scooter suffered injuries. After the incident, people from Jambukandi blocked Anaikatti-Thadagam Road seeking immediate closure of the Tasmac outlet, which is reportedly run by the kins of legislator, The Hindu further reported.

Following the accident, the protesters sat on the road refusing to remove the body from the road for more than five hours. Meanwhile, a senior police official said that Monday’s accident was the second fatal reported in the area this year.

According to J.M. Murugavelu, president of South Indian Tribal Movement and native of Jambukandi, the liquor outlet was not supposed to operate near tribal settlements. He said that the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) had written to former District Collector T.N. Hariharan to close the liquor outlet considering the impact on tribal settlements, says media reports.
