A Bengali couple who lost their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic in Uttar Pradesh, sold their daughter for money. They reportedly couldn’t feed the child, nor themselves.
As many people have been gravely affected by the spread of the novel coronavirus, it has taken a toll on the lives of the poor. While many suicides have been reported lately, the most shocking result of the on-going pandemic, is that of paternal parents giving up their own child for money.
Paban Thara and Thapasi, the accused couple had a 2.5-months-old daughter. After they lost their jobs, they decided to sell their baby to their distant relatives. Hence, they sold her for Rs.3000. The case came to lime light after their neighbours didn’t see their daughter for a few days. One of the neighbours intimated the police who investigated the issue.
The officials had found the distant relatives and rescued the child. They have sent the child to the hospital for a check-up before admitting her to a government facility for poor and abandoned children. A case has been booked against the parents.
After hearing about this case, UP’s Minister said that the government has various schemes to support the poor. He added that free rice and other essentials are being offered even during these difficult times. He expressed that such behaviour is deeply saddening.
