As people are getting used to the work from home culture, the Kerala government is all set to introduce the “Work-Near-Home” set up. This new idea came up after employees started facing numerous problems including power cuts to productivity issues.

This new set up and idea has been taken up after the productivity levels suffered a decline following the second and third month of the lockdown owing to various issues such as power connection and hardware issues, psychological issues caused due to various social stigma and family compulsions.

As per Times Now report, this new project is expected to be rolled out by October 2020 in 100 towns across Kerala. So places like, resorts, homestays and hotels that are kept unused due to the lockdown will be opened up. Also, any firm that requires a standardised office space can avail these facilities as per the usage by the IT department.

During a recent briefing, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that “Work near Home” will help in solving the challenges faced by the employees, who are currently opting for Work at Home facility.

“Net connectivity, power disruption and unavailability of laptops at employees’ homes affect the productivity of the firms. The Work-near-home facility established by the government in collaboration with Kerala IT parks can help in resolving this issue”, the Kerala CM said.

After this idea was discussed, there has been an overwhelming response from IT companies to provide a workspace where employees are provided with an internet connection and the basic infrastructure.

“While a majority of the women employees complained about the psychological pressure of handling both households and office work, a loss in employee morale has been reported from many places”, said CEO of IT Parks Sasi PM to Times Digital.

Further giving his insight over the proposal, the CEO stated that “this project will enable the ex-pats, banks and other interested parties to channelize their funds to a productive avenue and capitalise from the low real estate prices in Kerala. The construction of these spaces will cost Rs. 2000 per square feet approximately while the blueprint and the interior design of the work spaces are provided by the Institute of Indian Interior Designers”, he added.

Meanwhile reports also suggest that the new model is expected to offer an alternative to IT professionals in Kerala, who are looking to settle back home.
