Surekha, who was unwell for several months and had suffered a brain stroke in 2020 and a paralytic stroke earlier in 2018, breathed her last today.
Surekha, who made her debut with the film 'Kissa Kursi Ka' which was released in the year 1978, went on to do roles in Tamas (1988), Mammo (1995) and Badhaai Ho (2018). She won the National Award for the Best Supporting Actress thrice.
It was her role as a staunch matriarch in the primetime serial 'Balika Vadhu' that catapulted her to fame. She was part of the show from its beginning in 2008 till its end in 2016. The serial, which drew appreciation from all quarters, was later dubbed in Tamil and telecasted as 'Manvasanai' in Raj TV.
She portrayed the role of Neena Gupta's mother-in-law in the superhit Bollywood movie 'Badhaai Ho' starring Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead role. She received immense applause for her character in the movie. Surekha was last seen in director Zoya Akhtar's short film in the Netflix anthology 'Ghost Stories'.
