Thuppaki and Kallathuppaki title created huge controversy. Though “Thuppaki” and “Kalla Thuppaki” names differ, Kalla Thuppaki filed a case against Thuppaki team which impacted their promotional strategy. You may wonder then how come few movies are getting released with old Movie names (Naan Mahan Alla, Sattam Oru Iruttarai, Alex Pandian, Kozhi Koovuthu, Ayirathil Oruvan, etc) without any issues. There is a RULE – You can keep the old movie names which got released 30 years back legally.

Kozhi Koovuthu is a Tamil Movie starring Prabhu and Silk Smitha which got released in 25th Nov ‘1982. Immediate question which arises to anyone who sees the title will be “Is it remake of the old movie?” It is not remake of the old Movie. Director’s should avoid keeping old movie names for their news movies as it will raise a huge doubt among the people whether it is remake and it may impact their business too as the recent remake movies didn’t succeed at the box office. But, Kozhi Koovuthu title really fits the story of this movie. It is comeback movie for hero “Ashok Kumar” who had acted in movies such as Yuga, Muruga and Pidichirruku. Pidichirruku songs were really good and the movie got excellent reviews from media, but didn’t succeed much at the box office. Will this movie change the fate of Ashok Kumar, will this movie give us another promising debutant director? Let us see it in this review.

Story: It is about poor boy loving rich girl yet again. But, director had tried to make it interesting with wonderful acting by all actors, good music and excellent cinematography.

Ashok Kumar had really proved that he has got good acting skills and didn’t get much opportunity to show his skills in his earlier movie. But, he had got great platform to exhibit his skills in this move and he had captured it with both his hands. His characterization in the movie is almost similar to cunning Surya in “Pitha Magan”. It is really very challenging role and he had acted well both in comedy and sentiment scenes.

Shija Rose is heroine of the movie. As usual, she is also from Kerala and really looks beautiful in few scenes and looks average in most of the scenes. But, her acting is really too good and doesn’t look like debutant.

Bose Venkat is another actor who had enough potential but didn’t get a movie to prove his acting. Director Ranjith had really given him enough opportunity for him in the movie and he has really played his role to perfection.

Jothi Lakshmi, Mayilsamy, Sujatha, Naren and everyone in the movie had really lived the role. Casting is huge plus for this movie.

Music by E.S. Ramraj really adds more value to the movie. Background music for this movie was really good. “Usurae Usurae” song is one of the best melody songs of this year.

Cinematography by Jeyaprakash really captures the mood of the movie. Definitely, he will get more offers from Tamil Cinema and he will be one of the leading Cinematographer in future.

Ranjith had given us a movie with old story but with excellent screenplay in the last 20 minutes. But, movie was really slow and little dragging from the beginning. It should have been edited much more in the first half. Definitely, Ranjith is a talented director, but it is definitely difficult for any director to make 150 minutes movie with a story which we have been seeing right from our birth. Due to predictable story and nothing happening till the last 20 minutes of the movie, the movie falls under average category.

Overall, it is an AVERAGE movie with very old story and predictable scenes with excellent acting, Good Music and Wonderful Cinematography.

Rating for this movie by Common Man – 2.5 / 5
