MOVIES THAT TRANSCENDED CONVENTION AND SEXUAL BARRIERS

Tamil cinema has a reputation for being a little old fashioned regarding human relationships and sexuality and it has even been suggested that Tamil filmmakers are slaves to convention. But that is not entirely true because since the earliest days there have been films that dared to eschew tradition and have taken up subjects that are socially taboo in a sensitive manner. Let us take a look at some of these films.

Apoorva Raagangal
K Balachander is without doubt one of the bravest and best filmmakers that Tamil cinema can boast about. His Apoorva Raagangal made in 1975 turned its nose up at tradition by portraying a young Kamal Haasan who falls in love with a married woman (Srividhya) old enough to be his mother while the said woman’s daughter (Jayasudha) is attracted to his father (Major Sundararajan). It was a powerful subject handled with the deft touch of the true auteur. Little wonder that the film went on to win three national awards.
