PONGAL BOX OFFICE: DOWN THE YEARS

As we celebrate Pongal and welcome this year’s festival releases, namely Aayirathil Oruvan, Kutty and Naanayam, there are also memories of the past Pongals and the movies that hit theaters during those days. In the absence of the really big stars at the box office this festival season, though Asal is scheduled to hit screens soon and Vettaikaran is still very much present, let us take a look at the years past, the stars present and the way their films did at the box office. A peek at Pongals of the recent past.
Villu Padikathavan
2009
Villu

A Vijay bonanza for Pongal, that is what everyone wanted to see. The return of the Pokkiri team of Prabhu Deva and Vijay raised the expectation bar and the first time screen pairing of Vijy and Nayan too evoked interest. But, it was not to be another Pokkiri Pongal as Villu fell short of expectations. Even Vadivelu’s comedy failed to hit it off with the audiences.

Padikathavan

Dhanush’s attempt at a hat-trick after Polladhavan and Yaradee nee Mohini. This one was an out and out entertainer with Dhanush playing the usual boy next door who gives a naught about his studies and future but is willing to go all the way to Andhra Pradesh to get his love back. The guy who accompanies him on this quest (Assault Arumugam) is the funny bone of the movie. There was almost nothing in the movie that could equate to real life. It was as reel as it could get and in the end, people sort of took a liking to it.

Kadhalna Summa Illa

The Tamil remake of the Telugu hit Gamyam which told the story of two people from different ends of the spectrum of society coming together on a journey to find one person’s love. For the first time, the movie showed the lighter side of Ravikrishna the actor. The decent storyline and honest narration helped it garner some decent opinion even in the midst of heavy competition.
