Gopala Ratnam Subramaniam was born in Thanjavur and did his commerce degree from Vivekananda College, Chennai. After being a management consultant, he made his directorial debut in the Kannada movie Pallavi Anu Pallavi starring Anil Kapoor. Needless to say that he is one of the very few film-makers who have changed the face of Indian cinema.
