The summer scorchers

By Kaushik L M

Summer time has always been special for movie buffs and over the past 5 years, nothing has changed in this regard. In spite of the emergence of IPL since 2008, movie buffs have nicely divided their attention between the matches and the movies running in the nearby cinemas. As a result, the past 5 years have seen many solid blockbusters during the summer months and we present such movies which won appreciation from fans for being neat entertainers. By summer releases, we mean movies released between the weeks of late March and May.

2008 – Jayam Ravi and Jayam Raja teamed up yet again to give Santhosh Subramaniam, a neat family entertainer based on the Telugu movie Bommarilu. Dhanush’s Yaaradi Nee Mohini was another summer family special which hit the bulls-eye.

2009 – Suriya’s Ayan, a racy mass entertainer, was undoubtedly the biggest hit of the year and Sun Pictures’ marketing blitz also gave the movie an extra push.

2010 – Karthi’s first attempt at going mainstream, Paiyya, was a blockbuster from Day 1. Yuvan’s music and Tamannah’s angelic looks played a big part too.

2011 – Jiiva clocked his biggest success in 2011’s summer with Ko, directed by K.V.Anand. Harris was another pillar with his wildly popular score for this movie.

2012 – Last year, Udhayanidhi Stalin made his debut as an actor with Oru Kal Oru Kannadi, directed by Rajesh and featuring ‘Man-Friday’ Santhanam. Such a big hit has rarely been seen in recent times.

This summer, we have had movies like Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga, Chennaiyil Oru Naal and Settai, all on their way to being decent successes in their own right. And the IPL is on in full swing as well. It’s a treat for the masses on the whole.
