The Storytellers!

By Prathap

Straightforward narratives are increasingly becoming passé with storytelling acquiring new dimensions in our movies. Although we are still a long way from achieving what movies like pulp-fiction did in 1994, the narrative structures of our movies are increasingly changing - for better and people's understanding of such story telling elements with that. We are at the cusp of a change and here are a few movies that successfully veered away from conventional narrative style and still became a success.

Chennayil Oru Naal - Adapted from the Malayalam movie Traffic, Chennayil Oru Naal will follow a hyperlink format that follows a multi-linear narrative structure with different stories converging around one particular incident.

Virumaandi - One of the most acclaimed movies for its grit and valor, Virumaandi portrayed a double-narrative style with back and forth events from the perspectives of two people. This experiment worked well for the movie and made it almost a cult classic.

Aayudha Ezhuthu - This political thriller about youth uprising is often compared with the acclaimed Mexican film Amores perros but mostly for the narratives both the films follow. It revolves around three people and how their lives are connected with a common thread.

Vaanam - Another example of hyperlink format, Vaanam follows the lives of five individuals and each story represented natural elements such as air, earth, fire and water.

David - David is about two lives, each of them share one common aspect, the name as well as the fact that they are on the verge of making a decision that would change the course of their lives. David, however, followed linear narrative structure with two stories blending with each other.
