As real as it gets!

By Prathap

Taking inspiration from the fact-is-stranger-than-fiction phenomenon, we have movies based on real life characters that make for good viewing. To prove the point, Argo, the movie that won this year's Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards, is a dramatized version of a real-life incident based on the Iran hostage crisis. Here are a few Tamil movies, inspired by real life personalities.

Vana Yuddham - The dreaded, sandalwood smuggler Veerappan's life and his eventual capture made for gripping viewing in the recent movie Vana Yuddham, directed by Ramesh.

Periyar - The life of politician and social reformer Periyar, was brought to the celluloid, with the 2006 film. The critically acclaimed movie was directed by Gnana Rajasekaran and had Sathyaraj, Jyothirmayi and Kushboo.

Bharathi - The biographical film about Subramaniya Bharathi was also directed by Gnana Rajasekaran and won the National Award, putting Sayaji Shinde's performance credentials on the pedestal.

Iruvar - Maniratnam's Iruvar received a lot of publicity owing to the fact that it was an unauthorized biopic about MGR and the political scene during his period.

Guru - Mani attempted, rather successfully, another biopic that had traces of the life of India's business magnate Dhirubhai Ambani.

Nayakan - If Velu Nayakkar was an unknown name outside Mumbai, Mani has the credit of making his life worth watching on screen with Nayakan. The film won international acclaim and achieved cult status
