The Soubin Shahir-starrer popular Malayalam film, Sudani from Nigeria had bagged the national award for the Best Malayalam film in the 66th National Film Awards (2019). However, the director had taken to his social media and announced that he along with his team would boycott this event.

Soubin Shahir’s Sudani from Nigeria team to boycott National Film award function

Expressing dissent over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, (CAB), director Zakariya Mohammed on Sunday wrote, “Protesting against CAB and National Register of Citizens, I, as the director of Sudani from Nigeria, will stay away from the National Award ceremony along with scriptwriter Muhsin Parari and the producers of the film.”

Sudani from Nigeria is a 2018 Malayalam comedy-drama sports film that also features Samuel Abiola Robinson in important role. The film had won five awards at the 2018 Kerala State Film Awards, including Best Screenplay, Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value, Best Debut Director, Best Actor (Shahir), and Best Character Actress (Savithri and Sarasa).

At the 2018 National Film Awards, it had won the award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam and actress Savithri Sreedharan received a Special Mention for her performance in the film.
