In a throwback exclusive interview the actress had given to Behindwoods, the actress has spoken about the depths of colorism and appearance's importance in the society. She said, "I said no to that fairness ad. Because, when I told my sister that she could become fair like me if she ate veggies and fruits, she actually did eat them even though she does not like it. So, it felt bad to me - how a girl so younger, 5 years younger to me has been impacted by color and being fair."

She also added, "So if in some way I can make a point that such standards are baseless, I think that's why I chose to walk out of it. But that doesn't mean that I was not insecure. In fact if I did not do Premam, I would have been running after ways to get my acne off. So that's why - if I could in any way help towards such discriminations, that's why turned the offer down."

Sai Pallavi had appeared in uncredited roles as a child actress in Malayalam movie - Kunchako Boban's Kasthooriman and Jayam Ravi's Dhaam Dhoom. In 2014, whilst she was studying in Tbilisi, Georgia, film-director Alphonse Putharen offered her the role of Malar in his film Premam which gave her the much-awaited break.
