A small note of tribute to posts on World Posts Day

Today is World Posts Day! At a time when post offices are on their way to becoming a thing of the past and finding themselves into heritage sites, we walk down the memory lane trying to throw spotlight on the role of the snail mail in Tamil cinema.

There are quite a lot of films in Tamil wherein posts and postmen played pivotal roles in the progress of the film. We bring you a few:

Pokkisham directed by Cheran, featuring Padmapriya and the director himself, totally revolved around the letters written by the lead pair in expressing their love and affection.

On the other hand, Ajith and Devayani literally began and nurtured their love through letters in Agathiyan’s Kadhal Kottai which turned out to be a blockbuster in those days.

Bharathiraja’s Man Vaasanai had the snail mail play a crucial role between Revathy, Pandiyan and Nizhalgal Ravi.

In Cheran’s Vetri Kodi Kattu, letters were the only means through which Parthiban and Murali were giving hopes to their respective families which moved the film ahead.

When cinema is considered to be reflective of the socio-economic changes of any period, these are some of the films that would tell the next generation about the role of posts in a specific time frame. People still feel that snail mail has more emotion with a personal connect than email. But again, that’s the price one pays for technological advancement!
