Vijay kicked, Vimal helped and Shiva stood in the background

What is common between Vijay Sethupathi, Kalavani Vimal and Mirchi Shiva? Yes, 2013 is the golden year for all these stars but there is one more similarity. All three were artists who at one point acted as hero’s friends or character artists before catching their big break. Today as they ride their big wave of super stardom let’s take a look at their performances under the shadows.

Vijay Sethupathi was the antagonist in Sasikumar’s Sundarapandian. As the love lost hero who is waiting to marry Lakshmi Menon from childhood, he resorts to violence to finish off the hero. But even before this big role, Vijay has acted in several blink-and-you-will-miss scenes. He auditioned with Selva to play Dhanush’s friend in Pudhupettai. Playing second fiddle to Kokki Kumar paid off when it was his time to don the hero’s cap. Vijay was the man who’s kick ended Vishnu (hero) in Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu. He also plays a friend to Karthi in Naan Mahaan Alla. Selva, Suseenthiran all crafted this persistent hero into the perfect hero he is today.

Before playing the rib tickling insurance agent Meenakshi Sundaram in Pasanga, Kalavani Vimal was the gang that helped Illayathalapathy Vijay in saving Trisha from Prakash Raj in Ghilli. He was part of that iconic Kabadi team. He also carries the unique glory of playing a buddy to both Thala and Thalapathy as he has acted with both Vijay and Ajith in Kireedom and Kuruvi. Vimal, like Vijay Sethupathi, was part of the theater group Koothu-P-Pattarai that has a huge hand in sculpting the next generation heroes.

Shiva or Mirchi Shiva who is creating a niche for himself in the comedy genre with films like Kalakalappu, Thillu Mullu, Sonna Puriyathu, Ya Ya and Vanakkam Chennai has also several uncredited appearances to his credit. He was in 12B with actor Shaam and in Whistle as Gopi before Chennai 600028 happened. The rest as they say is history.

All these actors were lingering in the shadows of the limelight before glowing in it. Their persistence, perseverance and performance have escorted them to fame in Tamil cinema. That is the biggest lesson we can learn from these heroes – Never say never.
