The man behind some of the biggest films

By Kaushik L M

Anyone who even has a fleeting interest in Tamil cinema would be aware of the name Aascar Films Ravichandran (formerly Oscar Films Ravichandran). He has been among the most prominent names in the film business in Tamil Nadu as a producer and distributor for the past two decades. Initially he was famous for having distributed Jackie Chan’s films in India.

It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that an Aascar Ravichandran production would mostly generate an opening on its own even without any star power to back it. Such is the producer’s pull and network among the Tamil Nadu exhibitors circle. But till now his photo hasn’t appeared even once in the media. He wishes to remain elusive but lets his films do all the talking for him.

Some of the blockbusters that he has produced include Vaanathai Pola, Ramana, Anniyan, Unnale Unnale and Dasavatharam to name a few. He has also distributed high-profile successful films such as Kaadhaluku Mariyadhai (his first) and Pokkiri. Recently, he distributed Ajith’s much hyped Billa 2 in all areas and Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam in Chennai City and NSC areas.

A facet of his banner is that he would fund multi-crore marvels such as Anniyan and Dasavatharam on the one hand as well as small budget content-based films like Dishyum, Thalainagaram and Leelai on the other hand. Anniyan and Dasavatharam are in fact counted among the ten most expensive films ever made in Tamil cinema.

Currently if you look at the lineup of films that Aascar is producing, you would definitely be left with a jaw-dropping feeling. Films like Shankar’s I, Kamal’s Vishwaroopam sequel and Bharat Bala – Dhanush’s Mariyaan are all from the Aascar stable. In addition to these, the ace producer is also balancing it with small and medium films such as Boologam, Vallinam and Thirumanam Ennum Nikkah.

As we all know I, Mariyaan and Vishwaroopam 2 are among the most anticipated films in the near future and they are sure to be high on production value and class, given Aascar’s previous track record of delivering technically superior films. The skills of Shankar, Kamal and Bharat Bala don’t need any further elucidation either.

The teaser and promo of Mariyaan featuring Dhanush as a fisherman are being appreciated widely by the audience. On the other hand, the promos and music of Vallinam, a relatively small film, give an impression that this is a quality film as well.

If producing films without any compromise is an important facet of this banner, releasing them big and promoting them in the best manner possible are other unique features of this banner.

The kind of releases that Billa 2 and Vishwaroopam got in Chennai is hard to forget. Almost every screen in the city was screening these movies in the first week and exhibitors and distributors could recover their money quickly given the hype and release volume.

And when it came to promotions and marketing reach for a movie, Ravichandran arguably pulled off the most star-studded Tamil audio launch ever for Dasavatharam by bringing in the one and only Jackie Chan all the way to Chennai’s Nehru Indoor Stadium for the launch.

With such a glorious track record and a legacy of delivering the best in terms of grandeur, production value and promotions, a lot is expected out of the above mentioned films in 2013 and 2014 not just because of the directors and stars involved but also because of the banner which is presenting them.
