2012 is going to be an entertaining year for the film enthusiasts. With biggies like Billa 2, Kochadaiyaan, Thandavam, Thuppakki, Viswaroopam, Matraan and Nethaane En Ponvasantham lined up, we are now here to analyze what really makes these films ‘biggies’. The notion of BIG is not only related to big star cast and banners, but also the way the curiosity factor is build up.

Earlier just the movie posters were enough to create the curiosity. Later on trailers were added to the list. But now-a-days, a lot 'more' is needed to attract the crowd. The movie makers have understood that the 'more' here actually means 'less'. To be more precise, with less revealing, more curiosity is created. Many of our present film makers have understood this Mantra and the outcomes have been rewarding. Now even before the trailers, film makers release the first looks and teasers. A one minute trailer reveals nothing about the story, but it leaves us to ponder what the film could possibly be about.  Given that what can a teaser, that lasts approximately one third of a trailer’s duration and an image tell us? Practically nothing, but it kindles our curiosity to know more about it. Let’s take some good examples…

Billa 2- No teaser managed to get so many visits, as the Billa 2 teaser did. The film’s posters are now the widely used wallpapers. The stunts Ajith has performed, has made people want to see more of it.

Kochadaiyaan- Who would have imagined Rajinikanth posing in a majestic but still a difficult bharathanatyam posture? Just the first look was enough to create the required rage.

Thuppakki- Usually, a full film is needed to get into a controversy. But for this AR Murugadoss- Vijay project, just the first look sporting Vijay with a cigar was enough for social activists to allege the actor for “smoking in public”.

Viswaroopam- Kamal’s costliest and the most secretive film finally released its promo recently and earned mixed response.

To infer, ‘there is always a grain of curiosity at the base of something new that unrolls its question mark like a new wave on the shore’.
