So far, this year has been the year of surprises. Dark horses, so to say, have been cropping up every now and then to dominate the scene quite unexpectedly stealing the show and making decent money at the box office. Small, low budget movies without any star power to speak of, are the flavor of the season and here are a few that reaped commercial success.

Kalakalappu - Sundar C's return behind the camera was a rollercoaster of sorts with Vimal and Mirchi Shiva in the lead. The movie garnered a few laughs as well as a lot of money at the box office.

Sundarapandian - Yes we expected a realistic movie from Sasikumar and team but they also gave a commercial success. The low budget venture is still keeping the turnstiles busy.

Attakathi - The song Aadi Pona became a hit and the movie received an impressive opening followed by decent collections, in suburban centers and rural centers. Just as well for a movie that had no popular stars or names to back.

Naan Ee –This Rajamouli directed fantasy love story endeared people as much as it earned money. It went on to become a super hit with impressive collections.

Pizza - Pizza is well on its way to become one of the darkest horses of the hour. The rave reviews received by the movie are slowly transforming into collections and Pizza looks like it is on its way to become a sleeper hit.
