Despite churning out hundreds of movies every year, in arguably one of the biggest movie producing nations of the world, Indian movies have not been able to bring home an Oscar. Given that our movies are only capable of contesting in the Foreign Language category, we have put up a brave face and are tirelessly sending the best of the lot every single year. Without a doubt, legend Kamal Haasan's movies top the list. Here are those:

Saagar: The Ramesh Sippy directed Bollywood blockbuster of the eighties was a very Bollywood-isque triangular love story with lilting songs. May be that, or Dimple Kapadia's successful comeback, prompted it to be sent to the Academy Awards.

Swathi Muthyam: Swathi Muthyam was dubbed in Tamil as Sippikkul Muthu. The story of an autistic man and his accidental marriage is the film's plot and the film has maestro Ilayaraja's phenomenal music.

Nayagan: Said to be inspired by a true story, Mani Ratnam's Nayagan was a ground breaking film in many regards and fittingly, it was sent to the Academy Awards.

Devar Magan: The Bharathan directed Devar Magan met with critical and commercial success in India and it is only natural that it remained India's entry for the Academy Awards.

Kurudhipunal: Remake of Govind Nihalini's Drohkaal, Kurudhipunal showed what it would be to watch a gripping action thriller without any songs.

Indian: Perhaps one of the few commercially inclined Kamal movies to represent India at the Oscars, Indian was directed by Shankar.

Hey Ram: No other Kamal movies have received such 'mix bag' reviews like Hey Ram. One of the landmark movies of Kamal's career, Hey Ram and its ensemble cast went to the Academy Awards representing India.

But sadly, none of the above movies were selected in the final shortlist by The Acedemy Awards committee members.
