The news that Ajith is doing a cameo in the Tamil version of English Vinglish has made a big buzz in the Tamil industry. Being Sridevi’s comeback with Ajith’s cameo, this movie is sure to take a big opening when it releases in September. Note that Ajith has done extended guest roles in Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen and Nee Varuvai Ena. But his English Vinglish cameo is expected to last just around 3 minutes.

Other superstars are also not new to making cameo appearances. This has been a tried and tested occurrence based on friendship and goodwill.

In this particular piece, Behindwoods presents the first cameos of our popular contemporary superstars. Extended cameo appearances like Sukran, Seedan and Kuselan aren’t being considered.

Superstar Rajinikanth made his first cameo appearance in the 1978 movie Paavathin Sambalam starring Muthuraman and Prameela. The most recent one was when he allowed Shahrukh Khan to use a graphically created footage of himself in his Endhiran ‘Chitti’ avatar for Ra.One.

Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan has done innumerable cameos but his first was in another Muthuraman starrer titled Anbu Thangai in 1974. The legend’s most recent cameo was the one in the Malayalam movie Four Friends.

Vijay did his first cameo appearance in his father’s movie Pandhayam, which was strictly for the fans of the star. His recent fleeting appearance in the Rowdy Rathore song was also noted by the industry.

Suriya had his first cameo in June R. Lately Suriya had a cameo scene in Bala’s Avan Ivan where in he was seen as appreciating the ‘navarasas’ of Vishal.

Dhanush made a fleeting appearance in his father-in-law’s movie Kuselan in one of the songs, while Seedan was an extended cameo for the Kolaveri star. STR had his first special appearances in songs, in his dad’s movies Monisha En Monalisa and Sonnal Thaan Kathala. While in Goa, he had a small scene towards the end.

Surprisingly Chiyaan Vikram hasn’t had a single cameo appearance till now. But it might be just a matter of time before Vikram goes the Ajith way and accedes to a cameo.

Though it may appear that  these cameos are just an effort by the producers to rake in some box-office moolah by riding on the popularity of the chosen stars, we, the  fans are just getting more value for the price of the ticket admission. We have no reason to complain, Do we?
