Production: S. Shekar Rajan

Some films impress you hugely, while some don’t leave any impact whatsoever while some films make you wonder their very raison d'être. Ayyan directed by Kendiran Muniasamy, with newcomers Vasan Karthik (son of comedian Singamuthu) and Divya Padmini falls in the third category. The film was promoted much for its music by maestro Ilayaraja and one wonders if it was true.

Pithamagan Mahadevan, the father of hero Vasan is related to the vices personified MLA Shanmugaraja who will go to any extent to win votes. He is an autocratic dark character. An entire village is under his control and as shown in any such premise in such films, is much dreaded and ‘all things good’ is a casualty in the village.

On the other side is Divya Padmini who is fed on the idea(l)s of Argentinean revolutionary Che Guevara by her dad and grows up to be a whistle blower who questions and fights against injustices. Divya’s dad and Vasan’s dad are friends and there is also love between the lead pair. (Of course when this love happens is not told and it is assumed they are in love!). Circumstances play against Divya and the ensuing events form the rest of Ayyan.

The film is absolutely perplexing to the audience on all its facets. We are left wondering as to what the director wants to convey at all, if at all he wants to. Kendiran grapples in the story telling and film making department majorly. There are chunks of scenes which stand out separately, have no connection with one other and leave the audience to deduce their own story. It appears that the director believes in the intelligence of the audience and leaves them to form their theories.

Ayyan lacks absolutely in focus, plot and the screenplay leaves a lot to be desired. The reason to bring in Che Guevara in this enterprise is simply baffling. Unfortunately, Ilayaraja’s music does not help the film in any manner and the placement of a modern music in a remote village stands out obtrusively. The track Manasoram is a reminder of an old tune.

Hero Vasan Karthik shows potential and his best can be brought out by a good director. Divya Padmini does not have anything to offer. Other technical contributions fail miserably in this soul less flick. The listing of blunders in Ayyan is pointless as it unpardonably vague and can be best cited as an example for how a film should not be made.  Cinema is about engaging the audience for a good 150 minutes and Ayyan makes you look at the watch every now and then.

Verdict: Supremely Bad!
