Chathur Singh 2 star is a comedy film based on the Novel ChaalaaK Jaasoos by Mohammed Raza. After films like, Nehle pe dehla and Khalballi, this is Ajay Chandok s fifth film as director.
The film stars Sanjay Dutt as Chathur Singh, a foolish policeman who dreams of being the greatest detective ever. He misunderstands all sarcasm as appreciation. His antics make him notorious in the entire police department and especially in the books of Commissioner Sinha (Anupam Kher). However, Chathur Singh and his fan Pappu Panther (Suresh Menon) are undaunted and hell bent on solving all possible crimes and mysteries. This lands them in a case to find the murderer of the agricultural Minister (Gulshan Grover). The Minister s secretary, Sonia (Ameesha patel) is the prime suspect in the case but Chathur, convinced of her innocence and backed by the Minister s wife (Rati Agnihotri) follows Sonia to South Africa to uncover the case.
The film is largely inspired by the film Pink Panther. However, Chathur Singh 2 Star is a far cry from its inspiration. Let us analyse the specifics to see why.
In terms of acting, this is a film that calls melodrama. However, all the actors, including the veteran Sanjay Dutt have given a new meaning to the term. The performance of all the actors is below average. Ameesha Patel only adds visual appeal to the film as her performance borders on bad. Anupam Kher tries and so does Sanjay Mishra the taxi driver in South Africa.
There is nothing special about the story written by Rumi Jaffery and Sai Kabir. But what is worth noting is that for a film that claims to be a comedy, the dialogues by Sai Kabir are far from humorous. Costumes, performance, dialogues, action sequences- none of them evoke even a mild chuckle.
Rajeev Srivastava has wielded the camera well in most parts of the film. However, the scenes shot in a mall in South Africa are badly done as one can see the crowd in the background staring at the actors as they perform. In one particular shot, you can actually see a slow moving passerby being hurried out of the frame to keep the movement of the crowd natural. Editing by Nitin Rakode is a plus in the film especially in the dance sequences.
Music by Sajid Wajid is a let down and the choreography is nothing worth talking about.
Overall, the film is a failed attempt at humour which comes as a surprise considering the cast.
Verdict: Chathur Singh 2 star is not even worth half a star.
