Two
crimes under the same roof that is home
to one of the leading academicians in the
city – this deplorable act, of a dowry
suicide and the alleged association of a
TV actress, has sent shockwaves through
the city. First of all, the very act of
receiving dowry is a crime, and now, the
added suicide only further tarnishes and
destroys the image and credibility of this
family. |
|
|
In
the household of the former Vice Chancellor
of the Madras University, P T Manoharan,
the suicide of his daughter-in-law
Madhudevi has brought family under
the police scrutiny. Soon after the
suicide, Madhidevi's brother, Ganesh
Babu, filed a case and it was followed
by the arrest of Madhu's husband,
Naveen Kumar.
Insiders reveal that Naveen Kumar's
marriage to Madhudevi, daughter of
S S D Krishnamoorthy, an industrialist
in Thoothukudi, took place five years
ago amidst a lot of pomp and glory,
with the bride's side giving a dowry
of 500 sovereigns of gold and several
lakhs of rupees worth valuables. |
|
|
| But
the former Vice Chancellor's house was avaricious
enough to harass Madhudevi further for more
money. They are even accused of torturing
her by locking her up in their house in
Adayar. What's worse is the fact that Naveen
Kumar had an affair with a TV actress, Nirmala,
which added to the agony of the young bride.
|
|
Madhudevi
finally succumbed under the constant
pressure and committed suicide by
hanging herself in a family friend's
restaurant. She left a suicide note
condemning the actions of her husband,
father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law,
and the television actress for leading
to her death. She has stated that
the family extorted 64 lakhs from
her under threat.
The latest however is that, a few
MPs and senior police officers are
trying to pressurize the investigation
officer from further enquiry and are
trying their best to hush up the case.
Meanwhile, a search of Nirmala's residence
unearthed a lot of gold and cash,
which were gifted by Naveen Kumar,
adding more evidence to the victim's
letter.

|
| Now,
a new twist in the tale confirms the fact
that Nirmala has absconded too from the
scene, fearing an arrest! Police special
team Inspectors Sankara Narayananan and
Geetha, who rushed to her residence at Nelson
Manickam Road in Chennai were disappointed
to find that she had absconded. So, they
continued the search in her friends and
relatives' houses in Nungambakkam and Anna
Nagar. Since Nirmala is currently acting
in the soap, ‘Penn’, they even
went to that shooting spot, but she wasn't
there either. The special team has intensified
its search all over the city and the police
say that she may be arrested any time now.
Will justice prevail? We hope so.
