Since time immemorial, heroines from other
states have acted in Tamil films and several
Tamil heroines have acted in other language
films. In the early 2000s there was a trend
of directors and actors preferring Mumbai
models over our own Tamil ladies. Lately,
popular heroines are being imported from other
film industries and they seem to be equally
excited about working with big heroes. Here
are the justifications to that statement.
• Taapsee Pannu is a Punjabi who made
her debut with the Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam
which made her popular there. She is a software
engineer who later took modeling and eventually
entered films. The Punjabi Kudi was cast as
an Anglo Indian in Vetrimaaran’s film
Aadukalam and got noticed. She is now shooting
for Vandhaan Vendraan opposite Jiiva and is
also under consideration for Suriya’s
Maatraan.
• Hansika Motwani has been in the limelight
since her childhood for she has acted as a
child artiste in movies like Koi Mil Gaye
and many more films in Hindi. This Sindhi
girl is from Indore and is now a popular heroine
in Telugu cinema where she made her debut
with Allu Arjun in Desamuduru. She went on
to do several films in Telugu and Kannada
and is all set to take Kollywood by storm
for she has completed her work for Engeyum
Kaadal opposite Jeyam Ravi, Velayudham alongside
Vijay, Maapillai with Dhanush and has now
signed Oru Kal Oru Kannadi in which she is
paired with Udhayanidhi Stalin.
• Amala Paul, a Malayali from Ernakulam
won accolades for her Tamil film Myna. She
made her debut with Sindhu Samaveli which
was infamous for its controversial content
but with Myna she has now signed films opposite
big heroes. She is now acting with Vikram
in Pitha and Muppozhudum Un Karpanaigal with
Atharva. She is also touted to sign Vettai
opposite Arya being directed by Lingusaamy.
• Sonakshi Sinha who is now making
news for having signed Selvaraghavan’s
project with Kamal Hassan in the lead is from
Bihar. She was a model who ventured into acting
with Salman Khan’s Dabangg which was
a huge hit. She is also working with Akshay
Kumar in the Hindi film Joker and has singed
Race-2.
• Deepika Padukone is of Konkani origin
and was brought up in Bangalore. She was a
famous model who won the Kingfisher model
of the year award. She made her film debut
in the Kannada film Aishwarya and also appeared
in a small role in the Tamil film Snegidhiye.
She became a huge sensation with her debut
Om Shanthi Om alongside the King Khan. She
went on to do many more films in Hindi and
now she is ready to make her debut in Tamil
cinema opposite ‘Superstar’ Rajinikanth
in Raana.
