Chennai flood devastation could be far greater this year

Chennai flood during December 2015 can never be forgotten. The main reason for the devastation was the poor maintenance of Buckingham Canal. This year Chennai’s situation might become far worse if it rains as expected, according to media reports. The silt deposit in Kovalam beach mouth has grown massively. The junction of the canal in Kovalam which connects the drains of various places in Chennai has narrowed from 220 meters to 40 meters in width, reports say.

While the government has spent about Rs 18.30 crore for the construction of a barrier to keep the canal’s mouth open throughout the year, it will be of no help, and the situation might worsen due to faulty design, reported The New Indian Express.
