German parliament votes to legalize same-sex marriage

German parliament on Friday voted to legalize same-sex marriage after 393 parliamentarians voting to approve "marriage for everybody" and 226 voting against. "I hope that the vote today not only promotes respect between the different opinions but also brings more social cohesion and peace", Chancellor Angela Merkel said. Although Merkel opposed the move, she allowed her party members to vote individually based on their conscience instead of following party lines.
