According to reports, the Indian government had added 9.1 million new taxpayers in 2016-17. Notably, this is an 80% increase over last year. Several reports have indicated that this is an impact of India’s demonetization of high-value currencies. Notably, India only had 55.9 million individual taxpayers at the end of 2015-16.
