An Anurag Kashyap directorial that you would never expect, is what Manmarziyaan is. The title is self-explanatory. We've often seen films that showcase the complexities involved in a relationship, or multiple relationships and sometimes, love triangles too. But how often have we seen films that showcase the complexities of the people themselves? Here's a love triangle that involves three 'different' people. There's love, sex, understanding, ignorance, indifference, marriage, betrayal, and reunion.

Manmarziyaan, written by Kanika Dhillon stars Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee, and Vicky Kaushal in the lead roles. Rumi (Taapsee) and Vicky (Kaushal) are the quintessential modern couple who refuse to get off the bed. When they are caught in the act by Rumi's mother, the family pins her down for an immediate marriage. After Vicky fails to take up responsibility, a hopeless Rumi accepts an arranged marriage, thereby bringing Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan) into the picture. From thereon, the film takes on the different 'marziyaan' of the three 'manns'.

First up, Kanika Dhillon deserves much praise for efficiently exploring the different aspects of love and relationships. More importantly, for exploring people. Her writing is well-layered. The treatment of this beaten story is what makes Manmarziyaan stand out. Secondly, how often have we seen a bright Anurag Kashyap film? Probably never! This is one chance he gets to throw the colors around, and he has done an expert job of it! The characters are written with so much strength that Anurag finds a lot to extract from the performers. The direction is mature and the output allows you to understand why an Anurag Kashyap was required to pull this off. There is so much on paper that it doesn't require a visual push to explain itself.

We have a vibrant Vicky Kaushal who plays a carefree and irresponsible munda. He is cheesy when he has to be. His growth as an actor is sky-rocketing with every film. He is an abolsute treat to watch on screen. Abhishek Bachchan brings the much-required maturity to the story and he weighs himself in very comfortably. His experience comes in handy to play a character like Robbie. However, Vicky and Abhishek come off as mere supporting pillars in comparison to an exquisite Taapsee. This could very well be a performance she would never like to forget. She breathes life into Rumi and takes complete control of the screen. Her portrayal of Rumi lets you get under her skin and sense the confusions. The oscillation of complexities between these three characters is so meticulously written and competently performed.

On the technical front, Amit Trivedi strikes gold once again with Manmarziyaan. One may wonder why the film is filled with music and silence was restrained. But, things seem to have worked in their favor as it adds quite a lot of value to the emotions at play. The background score is fantastic and the songs are soulful. Sylvester Fonseca's cinematography is adept and the lighting is classy. There is more darkness than what hits the eye, but it remains swaddled by colors for the most part. There is more green, yellow, pink and sky blue and that helps the cause. After an interesting start, the film becomes a little shaky in terms of engagement. It only picks up post-intermission. But that doesn't pull down Aarti Bajaj's efforts in the edit.

Altogether, Manmarziyaan is a refreshing attempt at portraying people and relationships. Beyond its minute flaws, it lets you sync into the mood quite amicably. Watch it for the climactic walk and talk sequence that shows you not a cold-hearted but a heartwarming Anurag Kashyap!
