With every Friday comes new release in Tamil cinema and the genres and quality offered on each Friday also changes. But what does not change is the desire for Tamil audience to catch quality flicks or the movies of their favorite stars.

Living in a not so bigger city in USA, I am thankful to the dynamic organizers here in my city (Nashville), who screened recent flicks in spite of their demanding work schedule. Given the economics and cost of projecting a movie advertising and work involved, only movies with high expectations and good pre-release report get released. In turn me and other fans of quality movies have missed some recent movies which made a mark like Renigunta, Mun Dhinam Paartheney, Aval Peyar Tamilarasi. These movies were not released in any cities in USA. Though Angadi Theru was released in USA, it did not reach small cities like us due to feasibility and turn around ratio. Though these movies received wide range of success in box-office and with critics, they indeed were appreciated for their uniqueness. Though I have options like online streaming or free download I did not go for them because of not so great quality of print, sound and especially virus and spywares which get downloaded along with the videos.

At the same time, producers of the Hindi movie “Striker” made arrangement to rent the movie online via you tube for USD 2$. I am not sure how
successful that idea was, but I am pretty sure that this is the way to take the small movies to a wider audience across the globe. Apart from bringing in revenues to the producers it will also make sure that audience enjoy the movie in good quality without any hassles of online advertisements or virus etc.

Of course some changes need to be made before bringing in this business model. The content should not be available in India where the movies are released in theaters. Also in the initial phases some freebies should be given to get the audience familiar to this and get used to legal watching. Perhaps a big production house supporting small movies can try this or a consortium of small producers or producer’s council can give platform and infrastructure for this. Hopefully some efforts are made so as the right audience watch the movies legally from their PC’s who otherwise need to tune to pirated sites.

Thanks
