How Gautham Menon does it 'beautiful'ly...

I have always been fascinated by Gautham Vasudev Menon’s unique ability to bring out the hidden beauty in his heroines. Right from Minnale to the much awaited VTV he has portrayed his heroines so beautifully, an art only he has mastered. In an industry where most of the actresses are exploited to add more glamour quotient to the movie, and where many a times more focus is given to their navels than to their faces, Gautham has always focused on depicting them as beautiful as possible.

I would especially like to talk about Jyothika. Until Kaaka Kaaka, Jyothika was seen as yet another import from the north that can be used as a glam model. Be it her first movie Vaali or subsequent ones like Kushi or Thenali, she was used more as a glam girl. But in Kaaka Kaaka when the song ‘Oru ooril azhage uruvai’ began in the theatres, people suddenly realized that Jyothika is very beautiful. Her eyes, chubby cheeks, the cute reactions, all were beautifully captured by the cinematographer and a new actress was born. If we have a look at her filmography it shows the sudden change in characters offered to her after Kaaka Kaaka. Thanks to Gautham Menon, we got to see Jyothika in more beautiful roles than those that involved just body-showing. To mention about the other heroines, Reema Sen was never more beautifully shown than she was, in Minnale. Though she did not have much screen presence, Andrea did capture many hearts in Pachaikili Muthucharam. And it is a well known fact that none of her older movies portrayed Sameera Reddy as beautifully as Vaaranam Aayiram did.

Now he has done it again with Trisha. The very fact that Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa wallpapers are filling many desktop screens already is testimony to Gautham’s magic with her too. Though Trisha was noticed for her looks in Saami, Bheema, Kreedom, Abhiyum Naanum and to an extent in Aayutha Ezhuthu but none of these movies focused on depicting her beauty as done already in VTV wallpapers and posters. Going by history, I think VTV will be a good turning point for Trisha in the sense that she might get more roles in future that demand performance than just body-showing.

As a footnote, we cannot forget that Gautham has been responsible for giving new looks to his heroes as well. It was not until Kaaka Kaaka that many girls went gaga about Suriya. And the ‘little turned young’ superstar’s new avatar in VTV is already receiving many critical acclaims. But somehow I feel Gautham has performed the Midas touch more on his heroines.
