Q: When did you enter films?

Raju: I came to Chennai in 1977 to become a film musician. I also trained hard by learning several instruments. But, those days it was very difficult to get a big break. After many struggles, I joined as assistant sound engineer and turned to the technical aspects.

Q: You have a rich experience in films.

Raju: In 1984, I became a full-fledged sound recordist. In those days, technology was primitive and we had to stretch with whatever we had. Now, technology is advanced and the audience is also very discerning. My first film independently was KB’s Unnal mudiyum thambi. Kamal has given me the right exposure and I became popular with several of his films.

Q: How long do you take to finish a project?

Raju: It depends but I usually try to finish ahead of schedule. I take about 25 days to one month for a fully action-oriented film. For romantic subjects, it takes about 10 days. I have also spent six months on a film – Aalavandhan.

Q: How do you approach a project?

Raju: I get the visuals first and scan them fully. Then, we decide on the right mix of sounds. We add the effects in order to blend with the visuals.

Q: How has audience expectations changed?

Raju: They have become more specific. For example, punches in fight scenes now a days cannot succeed with the usual dishum sound. We need what is called flesh tone.

Q: How about Rajinikanth’s films?

Raju: I have worked in Siva, Annamalai, Badshah and Baba. Badshah was a superhit and I enjoyed working on the effects for the twirling finger mannerism for Rajini in that film.

Q: What is the secret of your success?

Raju: I approach my work with sincerity. I strive hard to complete the work before the deadline so that the producers are happy. I cooperate with the directors and ensure complete satisfaction for them.

Q: What would you like to tell the viewers of behindwoods?

Raju: I thank behindwoods giving me an opportunity to talk to the viewers.
