materials. Similarly in Dhil, the crowded locality
was recreated and it was appreciated well. In
Little John, it was again a big challenge to
create set props keeping the small stature of
the character in mind. In Bulandi in Hindi which
had Rajini in the lead, the chariot which I
created was liked by all. In Malayalam, Ingane
oru nila pakshi, it was a very simple set and
I enjoyed creating minimalist effect.
Q:
What is the nature of advancement in art direction?
Mani:
The materials and the props have developed immensely.
The audience also looks for novelty and realism.
We cannot do the kind of sets as in old films
which looked like stage props. We need realism
and relevance. We should create the effect with
subtlety.
Q:
Who are your role models?
Mani:
There are many inspirational personalities –
Padmashree Thotta tharani and Sabu Cyril. We
are all learning from them and we still have
to go a long way in emulating them.
Q:
How does Tamil cinema compare with Hollywood?
Mani:
They are far ahead in terms of materials, planning
and execution. But, we are also fast catching
up.
