J D Babu - Sound Recordists

How did you enter into Sound recording?

I started working in Prasad studios from 1981. I worked there for 19 years. I thank Ramesh Prasad and co for providing me an opportunity. I also thank Louis and Simon who were my teachers and they taught me about the technical aspects of sound recording. I started my career as an assistant and then I recorded songs and background music. At present, I am working in Bharani studios.

What were your projects?

I had done movies in Tamil and Hindi. In Tamil I had done around twelve movies. My movies include Hey Ram, Kaadhal, Devadhaiyai Kandein and London. I had worked with the art director Gautham Ghose, a national award winner. I had also worked with Vinayan, K.S. Ravi Kumar, Adhiyaman and Bala.

What are the different formats of sound recording?

Sound recording is done in 5.1 format. In 5.1 format a decoder and encoder is employed. A decoder converts the digital form to analog form while encoder converts analog to digital. Dolby CT 650 is the latest decoder manufactured. Separate tracks of actors, actresses, songs and music are sent to us. We mix these tracks as required in mixer. After separate streams are mixed, effects are added and coded with the video.
A backup is created in SR format in which the six track sound is stored as four track sound.

Which is the latest technology in sound formats?

6.1 format is the recent development in sound technology. It is mainly used in science fiction movies and action movies. In 6.1, left surround, right surround and real surround are present. Among these songs, Real surround is not present in 5.1. But in south India 5.1 is only used.

What are the components present in mixer?

The mixer which I use is made up of five layers. Each layer consists of ninety six layers. In workstation, effects, music and dialects are remixed and these remixed tracks are sent to console and then balanced. A joystick is present which selects the speaker in which the sound is to be heard. It is then imported to Hi-eight machine or MOD or the hard disk.

What are the sound formats available in theatres?

The two prominent sound formats in theatres are DTS and Dolby surround. In Dolby sound, the audio comes along with the movie. It is present along with the negative of the movie. It is analog in nature. In DTS the audio file comes separately in Compact Disc. A serial number will be present in the CD. This number will be burnt into the negative of the movie. In case if it is not burnt the sound will not be encoded with the movie.

What are the hardships faced by sound recordist?

We work hard for sound recording. For recording one reel it takes two days. But in theatres the speakers and amplifiers used are of poor quality. So our efforts are wasted and the quality of sound received is not up to

the mark. Technicians sell substandard speakers and amplifiers and theatre owners are not able to distinguish between standard and sub standard. In case the sound systems in theatres are of better quality audience will love watching movies in the big screen.

Thank you for giving us information about sound and sound recording.

I thank Behindwoods for providing me an opportunity to explain about sound recording. I also thank them for bringing out the technicalities hidden in film industry.
