Karaga is the oldest
and most important festival in Bangalore infused
with mythological theme. Every spring an echo
of the battle field of Kurukshetra is heard
in Bangalore during Karaga. The Puranas says
that Draupadi emerged as the embodiment of
ideal women. The Tigalars who hold Draupadi
as their principal Deity believes that Draupadi
(Shakthi) brims over during the Karaka festival.
Just after dusk on that day, a priest dressed
in female out fit leads a spectacular procession
accompanied by sword play by a number of dhoti
clad bare chested Tigalars. He carries a flower
decked pyramid on his head. A unique feature
of this festival is the unbroken tradition
of visiting the tomb of an 18th century Muslim
saint every year and it is a pure symbol of
Hindu Muslim Unity. Other festivals include
Kadalekaye Parishe (the farmer’s festival
a good yielding of groundnuts) and Vasantha
Habba (the dance festival)
