Maayavi is the story of a kidnap drama. Surya is a tourist guide in Mahabalipuram who indulges in petty crimes. He graduates to big-ticket heists beginning with Jyothika’s bungalow. The actress plays herself and therefore the police swoop in on the thieves. They however connive to kidnap her. What follows is a trite affair with a clichéd climax. Director Singapuli could have tightened up the screenplay to give a crisp finale.

Surya has given a superb performance. Jyothika is cute but does her bit of overacting. She has a put on accent for dialogue delivery which is quite jarring on the ear.

Devi Sriprasad’s music gives a sense of déjà vu. He shows great promise in rerecording and background score.
