Interview Of comedian Sugumar by T.Muthukumar behindwoods correspondent

Tell us about your family?

I was born in Alanganallur near Madurai. I have an elder brother, two elder sisters and had two younger sisters of which one expired. My father is a farmer by profession, and also a photographer.

Which was your first appearance on the big screen?

I had the desire to act in cinema from the age of six. I came to Chennai seeking a chance in cinema industry in 1998. My first appearance on the biggest screen was in the movie, Sakthi in which I danced along with many other dancers for the song Yana yana involving Vadivelu.

Can you tell us about the movies you have acted?

Of the 30 movies I have acted, only twelve movies were released. My first movie as an actor was Kaadhal Saadhi directed by Kasthuri Raja. But the film had not released. It was Oorvambu, a program in Raj T.V. that made me famous and helped me to get more chances in Tamil cine industry.

Which is your favorite movie in which you have acted?

Kaadhal is my favorite movie. Virumandi and Vasoolraja M.B.B.S. are the other favorite movies in which I enjoyed the most acting with Kamalahasan.

Who are your favorite comedy actor and actress?

Manorama is my favorite actress while Nagesh is my favorite actor. His movies, Neerkumizhi, Ethir Neechal and Server Sundaram are epics.

Having acted with Kamalahasan, what are your views on him?

Kamalahasan is an encyclopedia. My life style changed after I had acted with Kamal sir. He is a person who dedicated his entire life to cinema and a person with good foresight.

Do you have any desire of acting with the superstar Rajinikanth?

Actually, I was given the advance to act in the movie Baba. At that time, I was acting in a Telugu movie along with Junior N.T.R. But, for some reasons my character in the movie was excluded. If I get a chance to act in his movie, I will accept it gracefully.

What do you think of vulgarity in movies?

Vulgarity has been present in all forms of entertainment for a long period. It can be allowed up to one limit and should not include intentionally. I try hard to avoid vulgarity in my movies.

What are your thoughts about other comedy artists in Tamil cinema?

I enjoy watching Vadivelu’s comedy. His Madurai slang is his great asset. Koundamani is famous for his timing jokes. Senthil’s innocent face adds craze to Koundamani’s timing jokes. Vivek’s comedy with message is exceptional. Karunas has his own way of cracking jokes.

There is no national award for comedy artists. What do you think about that?

Kalabavan Mani who is one of the comedy actors was recommended for the National award for best actor in a Malayalam movie. Though it was not for his comedy, I feel happy that a comedian had been recommended for a prestigious award. Audience’s claps and laughter are our national awards.

What do you wish to say to the audience through Behindwoods?

This is my first ever interview to a website. So, I thank Behindwoods for giving me an opportunity. I appreciate their efforts for publishing interviews of upcoming artists like me which will encourage them. I request the viewers to watch my movies in theatres and support me for my efforts.

Thank You.
