For an upcoming movie called Amirtham, Bavatharini, Ilayaraja’s talented daughter, has been composing the music. This is her second film after Mitr-my friend directed by Revathi. In Amirtham, Ilayaraja has sung a song for the first time under his daughter’s baton. The song, in praise of Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, has been written by Pa.Vijay. The story of Amirtham revolves around the daughter of a temple priest and the son of the temple musician. She is a devout girl and wants to spend her life in spiritual pursuit a la Andal while he stokes the fire of rationalism. The resulting conflict forms the thrust of the story. Soulful music provides the right backdrop.

Vedam Pudhithu Kannan, who has worked as a storywriter for over 63 films under stalwarts like KB and Bharathiraja, has written the story, screenplay and dialogues. The film is also directed by him. Debutante Ganesh and Navya Nair are the lead pair. Girish Karnad is the priest and Rajeev is the musician. Rekha, Anuradha Krishnamurthy and Yugendiran are also in the cast. The film is being shot at Melkote, about 40 Kms from Mysore. A beautiful set of the Lord’s temple has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 5 lakhs. Other credits are Cinematography by K.V.Mani, dance by Kala, action by Stunt Siva and art by G.K.
