The elections for the Film Actors Guild
were finally over and as expected Vijaykanth
and his team members have emerged victorious.
But unseen at this point of time were
the difficulties faced by the members
of the guild before the election.
The election phase has been marred by
controversies this time. While the present
office-bearers had filed their nominations
again, there were opposing candidates
as well such as Devi for the post of President
and Raja for the post of Secretary. It
has been the tradition to convince opposing
candidates to withdraw their nominations
so that a unanimous election could be
made. This time however this has not been
possible. The reason – both the
opposing candidates were from the theatre

Vijayakanth has done commendably
well for film artists the

not be said for their theatre counterparts. Devi
said that she would ensure that indigent theatre
artists are provided a pension of one thousand
rupees per month if elected.
There had been conflicting reports of the goings-on
in the run-up to the elections. While Devi had
alleged that she has been receiving threatening
phone calls asking her to withdraw her nominations,
insiders already said that Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar
and Vijayakumar were all set to win by winning
over the rebels through suitable rewards. They
would do this to project a picture of unity among
actors, film and theatre. The latter however were
outnumbered in the voter college which ensured
the ultimate winner.
The elections were held in the presence of a retired
judge to avoid any malpractices.
